Sharon is a first-year PhD student in rehabilitation science. Professionally, she was a principal occupational therapist with 15 years of experience in neurorehabilitation in the public healthcare sector in Singapore. When studying at PolyU for her master’s degree in 2012, she had a pleasant learning experience with a group of supportive and knowledgeable professors from RS. Hence, she decided to pursue her PhD in rehabilitation science at PolyU. Her main research interests centre on the upper-limb recovery after stroke and the use of technology to deliver rehabilitation services in a new and innovative manner amidst the limited healthcare resources in ageing societies. Her PhD research is on the application of wearable devices to telerehabilitation to improve hemiplegic upper-limb functions in stroke survivors. The research aims to explore the use of technology-aided interventions to provide accessible, affordable and cost-effective rehabilitation options for improving the function of the hemiplegic upper limb in stroke survivors. Her research findings will contribute to the body of evidence regarding upper-limb interventions in stroke rehabilitation and to future guidelines beyond what the current services offer.
