We are pleased to announce at our Faculty members have achieved the following:-

Dr Li-Ta HSU and Dr Weisong WEN of the Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering won an award in the area of “AI, Data, Cyber & Software” at the Washington DC’s TechConnect World Innovation Conference and Expo (TechConnect). TechConnect recognizes the top 15% of submitted technologies based on their potential positive impact in different technological areas.

The “3D LiDAR Aided GNSS Precise Positioning for L4 Autonomous Driving” technology provides centimeter accurate positioning for mobile mapping system that is used to build high-definition maps for L4 autonomous driving vehicles operated in urban cities. They are the first team to incorporate the scanning LiDAR point cloud to perceive the surrounding environment to aid GNSS precise positioning.

The awarded project “Reliable Multiagent Collaborative Global Navigation Satellite System Positioning for Intelligent Transportation Systems” led by Dr Li-ta HSU of the Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering would be supported with a total amount of $3.1 million by the RGC Research Impact Fund Scheme (RIF) for 3 years.

The modern concepts of intelligent transportation systems (ITS), internet of things (IoT), digital twin and smart cities, all require accurate and trustworthy Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) positioning. This project develops a collaborative GNSS positioning algorithm that uses data from a centralized cloud server that is based on 3D city models, AI, and IoT. The proposed system can play an irreplaceable role in providing accurate, reliable, and absolute position tags in the coming digital era.

The team members include Dr Bing XU from AAE, Prof. Jiannong CAO from COMP, Prof Wu CHEN from LSGI, and Dr Jun ZHANG from ECE/UST. The application for this RIF project is based on the research of an AAE’s research postgraduate student, Mr Guohao ZHANG, who is supervised by Dr HSU.

Dr Xin ZHAO, Associate Professor of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, PolyU, has been awarded funding from the highly competitive China’s Excellent Young Scientists Fund 2021 (國家優秀青年科學基金) with the project “Engineering biomimetic microenvironment for bone repair”. She will receive HKD1.92 million to support her research project in Hong Kong over a three-year period.

Under the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Fund was extended to young scientists in Hong Kong and Macau at eight designated universities in 2019. A total of 25 young scholars from Hong Kong and Macau were been awarded funding this year.

We are proud to announce that Professor Jiannong CAO, Otto Poon Charitable Foundation Professor in Data Science and Chair Professor of Distributed and Mobile Computing, has recently been named a Fellow of the China Computer Federation (CCF), the leading organisation on computing technology and applications in China. With outstanding achievements and contributions in distributed computing, wireless network and mobile computing and big data analysis, Professor CAO was elected as one of the nine CCF Fellows this year.

Professor CAO joined COMP in 1997. He has published more than 500 papers in major international journals and conference proceedings, and has also directed and participated in over 130 research and development projects. For his exceptional research efforts, Professor CAO has also been named Fellow of IEEE, Distinguished Member of ACM, and a member of Academia Europaea. His research interests include distributed systems and blockchain, wireless sensing and networking, big data and machine learning, and mobile cloud and edge computing. The honour from CCF further reflects Professor CAO’s outstanding accomplishments in the field of computer science for the advancement of society.

The CCF Fellow Program was initiated in 2008 to recognise those members who have made outstanding achievements in the field of computer science or made exceptional contributions to CCF and have held membership for more than five consecutive years. The CCF Fellow is the highest level in the membership of CCF and currently, there are 150 CCF fellows, accounting for 0.32% of professional members.
