Description

The tool includes:

• several solution modules on different metaheuristic techniques, including genetic algorithm, differential evolution and particle swarm optimization;
• modules on optimization problems of benchmark functions and power system optimization problems, including the loadflow, optimal power flow and optimal reactive power flow;
• a user interface which allows the selection of different solution modules for solving different optimization problems; and
• an animation system for visualizing the details of progress in solution evolution.

Intended educational value 

This educational tool will give student a clear picture of (a) the advantages and disadvantages of different methods and (b) their performance. It is expected that it will enhance students' understanding of intelligent techniques and their application to real-life electrical engineering problems. Also their ability to work with others in a team environment, their creative thinking and their presentation skills can be improved.

Example of application

A mini-project has been set up for students to apply the metaheuristic techniques and solve different benchmark functions and electrical engineering problems.
