: Construction of an effective, broad-based process technology teaching package for Applied Biology & Chemical Technology Students (Part I)
Teaching and learning package for chemical and bioprocess technology subjects in our Applied Biology (AB) & Chemical Technology (CT) curricula
Description
The teaching and learning package is composed of:
- written instructional manuals covering the main subject contents with exercises and problem cases;
- learning resources, such as lists of additional readings, tutorial examples, assignment problems with model answers and solution manuals; and closed- and open-ended questions and self-evaluated tests formulated and created by both teachers and students; and
- teaching aids such as animated and simulated process technology concepts and situations.
Intended educational value
This package will be of value for improving the learning of chemical and bioprocess technology subjects in the Applied Biology (AB) and Chemical Technology (CT) curricula.
Example of application
Components of the instruction manuals - togeyher with exercises and quizzes, assignments, a discussion forum and an evaluation questionnaire - have been uploaded to a web page for a subject on WebCT.
Evaluation/Comments
This package has:
- facilitated student learning of what is a rather difficult subject;
- improved student learning and understanding of the subject content, as indicated by reduced failure rate in the assessment;
- stimulated student interest in the process technology subjects, as can be seen in the fact that nearly all the Year 2 students in both the BSc (CT) and HD (CT) programmes chose the higher level elective subject ABCT370.
