Construction videos to teach students about construction processes
Video production
A total of six construction jobsite videos under six titles were produced for classroom teaching during the 2013/14 academic year:
- Foundation excavation
- Operation of jobsite workshop
- Placement of concrete of a high-rise building
- Installation of concrete formwork and steel rebars
- Building demolition
- Construction safety
Two more videos were produced for classroom teaching across the 2014/15 and 2015/16 academic years:
- Pile driving
- Aerial video of marine construction
Use of these videos in teaching
These eight videos had been used in four construction subjects to enhance students' understanding of and interests in the actual constructions processes:
- CSE303 Construction Management I
- CSE399 Construction Technology and Management
- CSE359 Contracts, Specifications, Quantities and Organization
- CSE509 Quantitative Methods in Construction
Evaulation of the effectiveness of these videos
A survey was developed and conducted in two semesters of the 2015/16 academic year to evaluate the effectiveness of using these videos in teaching. Results show that watching the construction video clips is able to improve student's learning.
