English Across Curriculum: Specific Professional Development and Consultations for Discipline Specific Subject Teachers
The core team members discussed the concept and practices of EAC with discipline academics in their respective institutions. Discussions and suggestions included:
- The subject teacher's observations of the strengths and weaknesses of students in completing course assignments
- English language needs of their students
- Ways to improve the wording of course-embedded assessments
- Ways to include a grading component on English use in certain assignments
- Ways to word assessment rubrics and criteria/ descriptors
- Ways to help students in their subjects become more aware of the English language requirements and skills needed to complete their assignments
The project team met and consulted with around 50 discipline academics throughout the project. More than 13 discipline subjects received suggestions on writing assessment rubrics/criteria and/or agreed to add a grading component on English proficiency to motivate their students to pay attention to English use in discipline content subjects. These subjects include business, clothing and textiles, applied sciences, environment, architecture, engineering, social sciences and arts and humanities.
