: The Geospatial Education Forum (GEF): Resolving the challenges of a New Geospatial Education Curriculum

Workshop for Resolving the Challenges of a New Geospatial Education Curriculum

Description

The Workshop (Appendix) was attended by 24 people comprising eleven Project Team Members, six non-Project Academics, three Industry Representatives, and four Facilitators. The facilitators were post-graduate students from the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics (LSGI) whose role was to observe the participants and prompt them as needed. All deliverables were demonstrated with several of them utilized in the form of exercises for the participants to complete.

Due to the small number of attendees there was no need to conduct a formal survey. The verbal feedback from the participants was generally positive, but it was surprising how little knowledge of the GEF some Project Team Members had retained between the Workgroup and the Workshop with lengthy discussion of “why do it like that” often prefacing a new activity despite all items having been fully presented in the Workgroup. The most pleasing aspect was the enthusiasm shown by the Facilitators for the concept of the NGC and for the materials that were produced. Two of the Facilitators were international students who could see how useful the materials would be in their home institutions.

Disappointingly, representatives from other geospatial-related organisations such as the Hong Kong Geographical Association who initially showed interest in the Workshop did not attend.
