Report on the Pilot Run of the Cluster Area Requirement Subject "Managing Organizations"

Implementation of the Pilot Run

The subject lecturer closely worked with the ELC team to conduct a systematic evaluation on the efficacy of the curriculum and pedagogical design of the subject in achieving the intended goal of enhancing students' language competence.

Students were required to write an extensive piece of writing (2,500 words in English) in order to be eligible for the writing credit for the subject, Students were expected to demonstrate competence in understanding the characteristics of managing organizations and key management principles in business organizations. Students had to critically assess the relationship between strategies and managment activities such as planning, organizing, leading and controlling. Students were also required to participate in instructional activities in which they are provided with assistance in the writing assignment. The writing assignment and the performance of the students in the related activities were graded by the subject lecturere and the ELC staff and this formed a substantial proportion of the final grade of the subject.


Evaluation of the Project

The subject lecturer had provided sufficient support to ELC to ensure that the usefulness and effectiveness of writing requirement. A general consensus on the core intending learning outcomes has been reached in this pilot study. It was a good experience to work with ELC staff who were responsible for providing support in language-related instructional and assessment activities which helped assist students in acquiring appropriate writing skills.

The subject received positive students' feedback on whether the curriculum and pedagogical design of this subject was effective in helping them achieve the learning outcomes for the writing requirements. In general, students agreed that this subject and the writing requirements met their expectations. The tutorials conducted by ELC matched their expectations as well. They reported that by attending the tutorials conducted by ELC they have identified their language problems and improved their English writing skills.
