: Use of Web 2.0 Tools to Create a Co-Learning Environment Among Students and Teachers

Personal Learning Environment & Network (PLE&N)

Description

The Personal Learning Environment & Network (PLE&N) provides a platform to support lifelong learning. It includes feeds and tags that will stay on the platform even when the semester has ended. On this platform, every student can keep himself updated of new developments and trends in the field. Other than the information received in classroom learning, all students can also learn from the information received on this platform.

Intended Educational Value

With this platform, students no longer rely on lectures, laboratory sessions and textbooks only to learn knowledge and skills. They can also learn by reading the information received on the platform. The provided RSS feeds help students understand how a particular concept is being manifested or applied in the real world and identify current trends and new developments in the field. Students can also learn from each other through annotations and comments, and that shift learning from teacher-centered to peer-based and learner-centered.

The RSS feature also helps students develop their own values and beliefs on certain topics, and that helps motivate them to take the initiative to learn more about these topics. As a result, students become more inquisitive.

The RSS feeds may provide additional material that substantiate what is being taught in classes and help students understand better how a concept is being applied in practice.

Evaluation/ Comment

“PLE is a good platform for us to discuss and collaborate. It's a new learning way for us to share ideas. I appreciate that I can contribute to this subject, and have form a structure of KM in mind. At the end, thanks very much to our Dr. Eric and Dr.Benny, you two really make us educated on KM. I hope everyone will continue share information here in the future.”
