: An Interactive Power System Simulator with Animated Graphics for Education and Training

Interactive Power System Simulator (supplemented with command scripts and client/server communication protocol)

Description

Intended educational value

An interactive power system simulator with animation graphics is a powerful educational tool which provides students with "hands-on" experience of the operation of a realistic power system. Students can interactively introduce disturbances and recovery actions to observe the dynamic responses of the system in real-time.

Example of application

A set of laboratory exercises based on this simulator will be developed for use in degree and higher diploma power system engineering subjects.

Evaluation/Comments

Currently, such a facility is only commercially available as expensive despatch training simulator designed for training power system control engineers in utilities. Therefore, this simulator has a great potential for further develop, ent as a low-cost power system training simulator for undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as young power system engineers.

Remarks

Dissemination activities taken or planned
A set of scenarios is being prepared to demonstrate different modes of operation of a power system under various loading conditions. A few undergraduate students will be invited to evaluate and comment on the scenarios, which will be very useful in finalizing the lab exercises for use in the coming power system subjects.
