Aligning Learning Teaching Activities and Assessment for Constructive Learning
(TDG 2005/09)

Objectives:
An outcome-oriented curriculum was designed and trialled for ITC’s "Fashion Brand Management" course. The objectivesof the project are to:
- evaluate students' perceptions of the student-centered activities and assessment tasks used;
- test and apply constructive alignment in learning and teaching activities;
- design and develop more in-process learning and teaching activities to create a more supportive learning environment for selected intended learning outcomes;
- apply and align appropriate assessment to assess the learning outcomes; and
- disseminate the results of using these new learning and teaching methods and assessment alignment to colleagues in ITC.
Remarks:
- Students found the group projects and learning portfolios useful for their learning but considered the workload to be heavy, which could be due to their tendency to delay all the activities until close to the submission dates.
- There was a positive correlation between active participation in the planned learning/ teaching activities and performance, particularly in the final group project.
- This project showed that students need to be reminded repeatedly about the rationale and advantages of this learning and teaching approach.
- Discussing and signing a "contract" with the students may be considered in the future.
- This project also showed that students' attitudes to aspects of the approach changed after they became graduates. For example, when they were students (all the issues concerned themselves), they viewed their workload as too heavy; but after they graduated, they thought the workload for the next cohort was fine or even something more could be tried out.
