Google Chrome 42 Disables NPAPI Plugin Support by Default

Issue Description: Google has disabled NPAPI plugin protocol support in Chrome 42 by default with plans to completely remove NPAPI support in September 2015.

 

Steps to Replicate:

  1. Upgrade Google Chrome to version 42 or higher
  2. In Chrome, access any of the following tools/features:
  • Collaborate
  • Authored contents that require Java; for example, some older SCORM packages or publisher content
  • Virtual Classroom
  • Lightweight Chat Tool
  • Multi-File Drag-and-Drop in the Content Collection or Course Files area

Expected Behavior:
The feature/tool functions.

Observed Behavior:
Chrome reports that the plug-in is not supported.

 

Resolution/Workaround: Firefox:
1. Copy and Paste "about:preferences#applications" into the URL bar of Firefox
2. Scroll through the list ad next to each content type that is not working click on the action task (somtimes need to click twice) and select the compatible plugin
NOTE: This may require closing and relaunching the browser

NPAPI support is needed for browsers to utilize Java.
