GreenCoin is an innovative initiative to promote green culture and reward sustainability actions on campus. Initiated by CSO, it is open for current PolyU staff and students who are eligible to download and install a dedicated mobile app and make use of it to gain and use virtual credits in the name of Coins. Upon performing and fulfilling certain specified actions and activities on campus, users will be able to earn Coins which they can accumulate via their mobile app. The Coins earned can be exchanged for gifts or specific e-coupons for use in dedicated campus facilities.Read More
CSO prepares and publishes sustainability report about the environmental, social and economic aspects of PolyU. It presents PolyU’s governance model and organizational values towards the development of a sustainable community. The Campus Sustainability Survey is a campus-wide opinion-seeking exercise organized by CSO on a regular basis. University stakeholders are invited to complete a survey and share their views about the environmental performance and campus sustainability practices across the campus. Views collected will be analyzed and be used to help to set the strategies for the University’s sustainability development.
CSO keeps track of the University’s environmental performance and maintains a database of metrics such as energy consumption and waste disposal information. This information will be used in carbon accounting as well as assisting the formulation of campus sustainability related policies and strategies.
CSO serves as a facilitator, convening and partnering with external organizations to foster positive changes and advance sustainability on campus. Through various promotional and publicity channels, CSO encourages wider campus participation and support in different charters and frameworks, energy-saving campaigns, low-carbon events and community activities which aim to bring forth a sustainable global society.
UrbanFarming@Y6 is a fun-packed farming programme brought to the campus community by CSO since 2015. Located at 6/F of Lee Shau Kee Building (Block Y), planter boxes are set up and maintained by enthusiastic staff and students who aspire to experience organic farming practices and grow their own food crops. Through demonstrations, workshops and plenty of hands-on work, participants are given the opportunities to learn and enhance their cultivation skills, understand more about the nature and a more sustainable way of life.Read More
The urban farming programme reaches a milestone in the summer of 2018 when CSO opens another farm in the VA Terrace. Named UrbanFarming@U Seed, it combines principles and practice, enabling participants to acquire knowledge on organic farming and hands-on experience working at their planter boxes through a series of workshops. More importantly, this farm utilizes 100% upcycled materials, i.e., made from discarded wooden pallets and screws and delivers all necessary functionalities and guarantees durability. It is the first of its kind and a very successful showcase for sustainability.Read More
CSO assists the Campus Sustainability Committee in the planning and is responsible for the execution of activities and operations in association with the PaperReduction@PolyU campaign in support of the University’s campus sustainability development and its determination to go paperless.
