As the executive arm of Campus Sustainability Committee, CSO plays a major role in assisting the Committee and the University to formulate campus sustainability related policies as well as guidelines. CSO is also the main advocate to steer campus sustainability initiatives across campuses, and collaborates with Departments and Offices to promote the integration of this “green mindset” in our daily operations and campus living.

PaperReduction@PolyU

CSO assists the Campus Sustainability Committee in the planning and is responsible for the execution of activities and operations in association with the PaperReduction@PolyU campaign in support of the University’s campus sustainability development and its determination to go paperless. Information and paper conservation best practices are disseminated to all departments and offices. Through different channels, CSO also engages and encourages the campus community to reduce reliance on paper.

Green PolyU Awards – Green Office

Steered and organized by CSO, this initiative aims to raise environmental awareness of all staff on campus and bring together all faculties, schools, departments and offices to share experience and accelerate positive changes through the execution of green workplace practices. Talks/seminars, tailor-made workshops, self-assessment tasks and best practices sharing are arranged under this programme.

Departmental Green Officers

Departmental Green Officers

CSO partners with a network of Departmental Green Officers (“Green Officer”) nominated by Deans/Directors/Heads of faculties, schools, departments and offices who dedicate themselves to building a sustainable university. These Green Officers will also help to motivate their colleagues in the workplace and share their experiences and skills with them. Regular training activities and visits are arranged by CSO to support them.

PolyU Campus Sustainability Weeks

Since 2013, we bring the PolyU Campus Sustainability Weeks to the campus annually which serves as a platform for dialogues on sustainability and sharing of green ideas. Talks, workshops, exhibition, tours and other exciting games are arranged, inviting the PolyU community to experience and reflect on their behaviors and encourage them to adopt a green lifestyle.

Organized for the first time in November 2015, VeggieLicious is the unique ‘veggie’ event on campus which aims to reinforce the significance of sustainability and to raise awareness of green dining among the PolyU community. UrbanFarming@Y6

UrbanFarming@Y6 is a fun-packed farming programme brought to the campus community by CSO since 2015. Located at 6/F of Lee Shau Kee Building (Block Y), planter boxes are set up and maintained by enthusiastic staff and students who aspire to experience organic farming practices and grow their own food crops. Through demonstrations, workshops and plenty of hands-on work, participants are given the opportunities to learn and enhance their cultivation skills, understand more about the nature and a more sustainable way of life.

It presents PolyU’s governance model and organizational values towards the development of a sustainable community. Campus Sustainability Survey

Campus Sustainability Survey

The Campus Sustainability Survey is a campus-wide opinion-seeking exercise organized by CSO on a regular basis. University stakeholders are invited to complete a survey and share their views about the environmental performance and campus sustainability practices across the campus. Views collected will be analyzed and be used to help to set the strategies for the University’s sustainability development.


Environmental Performance Tracking

Environmental Performance Tracking

CSO keeps track of the University’s environmental performance and maintains a database of metrics such as energy consumption and waste disposal information. This information will be used in carbon accounting as well as assisting the formulation of campus sustainability related policies and strategies.


Community Involvement

Community Involvement

CSO serves as a facilitator, convening and partnering with external organizations to foster positive changes and advance sustainability on campus. Through various promotional and publicity channels, CSO encourages wider campus participation and support in different charters and frameworks, energy-saving campaigns, low-carbon events and community activities which aim to bring forth a sustainable global society.
