Imagine a world in which lifelong learning is possible at any time and anywhere a learner desires. This would be a world in which universities have global reach, attracting the brightest minds and taking numerous opportunities to experiment with, refine and enhance their pedagogy. Sound too good to be true? Now imagine that the courses offered are also usually free.

This is not science fiction, and no one has to wait for it. MOOCs are revolutionising learning experiences in a global context, combining novel teaching approaches, interactive videos and live broadcasts to whoever wants to join. Participants take the courses online, when they want to, and continue with their learning at a pace that suits their own busy lives.

As Prof. Eric Tsui, Chairman of the PolyU MOOC Steering Committee and Professor at the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, commented, "The soul of a MOOC is the interweaving of education, multimedia and social networking. MOOC courses are usually designed with the learner in mind. MOOCs are often interactive; for example, videos may pause to stage a quiz to gauge learners' understanding."

PolyU now has two recording studios on campus with the technical expertise needed to apply the highest production standards for the MOOCs it creates. "To offer a professional and appealing MOOC course, course contents (e.g. videos, quizzes and reading materials) and presentations matter a lot," Prof. Tsui explained.
