PolyU has long been advocating university social responsibility (USR) in different aspects. Improving the environment in the community is one area. The University has proposed to construct a Green Deck over the Cross Harbour Tunnel plaza in Hong Kong as an innovative solution to tackle the air quality, overloaded footbridge and connectivity problems in that vicinity. Recently, PolyU introduced its Green Deck proposal at the World Sustainable Built Environment Conference. A sharing session saw participants exchanging ideas on the potentials and challenges of this project.

Another USR initiative is the publication of the book University Social Responsibility and Quality of Life co-edited by Prof. Daniel Shek of PolyU and Prof. Robert Hollister of Tufts University in March this year. The book is a collection of practices and insights of social responsibility projects contributed by 12 members of the USR Network.
