Recently, China’s first Institute for Disaster Management and Reconstruction (IDMR) jointly established by PolyU and Sichuan University was officially opened. Located in Jiang An Campus of Sichuan University, the 20,000-square metres IDMR is home to six laboratories and a disaster database and resource centre, all supported by a generous grant from The Hong Kong Jockey Club.

Earlier, both institutions co-organized the Forum on “Post-Disaster Revival and International Disaster Reduction” to conclude lessons learnt from Wenchuan Post-Disaster Reconstruction and Lushan 4.20 Earthquake.

After the Lushan 4.20 earthquake, IDMR has mobilized trained professionals to provide support for relief work in the areas of nursing, rehabilitation, social work and psychology. Prof. Cecilia Li of Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, Prof. Samantha Pan of School of Nursing and Dr Timothy Sim of Department of Applied Social Sciences have been providing assistance and support in different ways.

In relation, PolyU President Prof. Timothy W. Tong, Chairman of PolyU Court Prof. Roy Chung and several PolyU Council members formed a delegation to Sichuan. They visited Yingxiu Primary School and learnt about the establishment of a social work station by PolyU experts in the school. Details>> Details>>
