Dr LUK Wing Pong Robert

Associate Professor

BSc & Dip. Eng.(Southampton); MSc(Warwick); PhD(Southampton); FBCS; SMACM; SMIEEE, CEng, CITP

Biography

Dr Luk was awarded a BSc in Electronic Engineering by the School of Electronics and Computer Science of the University of Southampton. He then studied MSc in Cognition, Computing and Psychology at the Department of Psychology, University of Warwick. Later, he went back to the School of Electronics and Computer Science, University of Southampton to complete his PhD. After he returned to Hong Kong, he became a University Lecturer at the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics, City University of Hong Kong. In 1996, he joined the Department of Computing, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He was the Deputy Director of the Chinese Computing Laboratory between 1996 and 1998.

Dr Luk is mainly interested in Information Retrieval. He has worked in various aspects of Information Retrieval, including indexing, retrieval models, feedback, string search, search interface, search evaluation, etc. He led his group to participate in open search engine evaluation workshops, like TREC and NTCIR. His search engine is being evaluated using terabyte collection at present. He was a visiting scholar at the Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval, University of Massachusetts at Amherst, USA, in 2000. He has received various awards and prizes, for example a prize for the journal paper, successful technology transfer award and research grant achievement award. He spent his industrial internship at IBM Hursley. He has published over 100 papers in major journals (e.g., ACM TOIS, IEEE PAMI and IEEE TKDE) and conference proceedings (e.g., ACM SIGIR, ACM CIKM and IEEE ICASSP).

Dr Luk is a chartered fellow of the British Computer Society (BCS), a senior member of the ACM and a senior member of the IEEE. He is also a chartered engineer and a chartered information technology professional. He has served as a reviewer for many journals (e.g., ACM TALIP, IEEE TKDE and IEEE TEC) and conferences (e.g., ACM SIGIR, ACM CIKM and IEEE NLPKE). He is also on various editorial (review) boards (e.g., Information Processing and Management).

Research Interests

  • Robert is interested in information retrieval and science of science. He has worked on various aspects related to information retrieval (e.g., retrieval model, indexing, etc.) and showed that information retrieval is a scientific discipline. He also wrote a paper on showing how computer science can be a science by pointing out that computer science is a kind of engineering science which can be divided into applied and pure engineering science. Note that OPUS does not have a full list of his research works.
