Organized by the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD), and co-organized by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), the Seminar on “Nature-based Solutions (NbS)-The Global Standard and the Hong Kong NbS Design Guidelines” was held on March 6, 2026 at PolyU, attracting over 200 participants from academia, with participants from more than 10 government departments also sending representatives. The event aimed to complement the official release of the Hong Kong Nature-based Solutions Design Guidelines (HKNbSDG) on March 3, 2026, promoting deeper understanding and application of the Guidelines among industry professionals.

Mr. Hok-shing FONG, Michael, JP, Director of the Civil Engineering and Development Department, and Prof. LI Xiangdong, Dean of the Faculty of Construction and Environment at PolyU, delivered opening remarks at the seminar. The event invited several speakers, including Mr. Charles KARANGWA, Global Head of Nature-based Solutions Management Hub at IUCN; Mr. Stephen SUEN, Director and Nature-based Solutions Lead at AECOM Hong Kong; and Ms. Joyce LAU, JP, Project Manager of the North Development Office (NDO) of CEDD, to share their valuable experiences on NbS. The speakers engaged in in-depth discussions on the global standards of NbS, the newly released Guidelines, and their practical application in the Northern Metropolis.

The panel discussion session was moderated by Prof. Yuhong WANG from PolyU, focusing on an in-depth exploration of the challenges in implementing NbS in the Northern Metropolis. In addition to the aforementioned speakers, the panelists included Dr. Pengbin WANG from IUCN; Mr. Gavin WONG, Deputy Project Manager of the NDO of CEDD; and Mr. Simon CHAN, Assistant Director of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD). The discussion was lively and productive, helping the industry further deepen its understanding of the Guidelines.
