Research Centre for Advanced Technology in Structural Engineering (RCATISE)

The Structural Unit in CEE carries the following missions.

  • To conduct research in structural engineering and to develop advanced technologies, in particular, those of socio-economic importance to Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland,
  • To facilitate the transfer of these technologies to the construction industry through specialist consultancies, technical and professional publications, conferences and seminars, and continuing professional development training courses and
  • To assist structural engineers in Hong Kong to become the key-players in the region and in providing quality living environment to the community in a sustainable manner.

Members of the Structural Unit possess expertise in advanced technologies in eleven areas of structural engineering and related disciplines which are important for the sustainable development of metropolitan cities, such as Hong Kong and other major cities in the Chinese mainland, in particular, in the Pearl River Delta area. These research areas are bridge engineering, cold-formed steel construction, concrete technology, fire engineering in structures, foundation engineering, FRP composites in structures, non-linear integrated design and analysis of steel structures, Steel and composite structures, structural dynamics and temporary structures and scaffolds. The staff members in the unit have been awarded a number of research grants from various funding bodies and they are involved regularly in various scholarly and professional bodies such as editing of two Science Citation Indexed journal, as Advanced in Structural Engineering and Advanced Steel Construction, sitting in numerous editorial boards in leading journals, organization of several international conferences as International Conference on Structural Dynamics in 1995, International Conference on Advances in Steel Structures in 1996, 1999, 2002 and 2009, International Conference on Advances in Structural Dynamics 2000, International Conference on FRP Composites in Civil Engineering 2001 and International Conference on Advances in Building Technology 2002. The unit members also sit in various professional and government boards as code committees in Buildings Department and various boards in the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers.

In addition to consultancy services, the unit also plays a leading role in providing short courses for continuing professional development (CPD) of engineers as an effective form of technology transfer. In the past, members of the unit organized many popular short CPD courses and technical seminars on the topics of bridge engineering, concrete technology, design of steel and composite structures, retrofitting using FRP composites, performance of tall buildings, wind engineering, steel structures and fire engineering. Moreover, international experts are often invited to present latest technology to local engineers. Every year, members of the unit also run the professional preparation course for IStructE Part III Examination.

The motto of the Structural Unit is "Transfer of sustainable technology towards quality living environment for the local society and the region"
