The Department admits both MPhil and PhD students. The normal duration of study for an MPhil degree is two years and for a PhD degree is three years for students with an MSc degree or four years for those with only a Bachelor's degree. Prospective students are advised to look up the Major Research Areas of CEE Staff to have a feel of the research focuses of individual academic staff members and contact them for more details before they apply. Full-time research students are normally offered a stipend.

Admission Requirement

Academic Requirement for General Admission

  • A Master degree containing a significant research component (such as a dissertation), conferred by a recognized university;

PLUS

  • A Bachelor’s degree with First or Second Upper Class Honours, or the equivalent, from a recognized university

* In exceptional circumstances, applicants with only a Bachelor’s degree with First Class Honours, or the equivalent, conferred by a highly ranked university (internationally or nationally), may be considered.

 

Academic Requirement for Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme

  • A Master degree containing a significant research component (such as a dissertation), conferred by a highly ranked university;

PLUS

  • A Bachelor’s degree with First Class Honours, or the equivalent, conferred by a highly ranked university.

* In exceptional circumstances, applicants with only a Bachelor’s degree with First Class Honours, or the equivalent, conferred by a highly ranked university (internationally or nationally), may be considered.

 

English Language Requirement

The requirements for applicants who do not have a degree for which English was the language of instruction at a recognized university are:

  • An overall score of at least 6.5 (with score for the writing component at 6.0 or above) in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS);

OR

  • A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 80 or above for the Internet-based test (with a writing score of 23 or above) or 550 or above for the paper-based test (with a score of 4 or above in the Test of Written English).

All English language test scores are considered valid for five years after the date of the test.

Semester 1 Intake (September)

The CEE Department will consider the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) and CEE Studentship at the same time. All applications MUST be made via the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme.

  • Make contact with a potential supervisor before submitting your online application. For contact information, please refer to the Major Research Areas of CEE Staff.
  • Submit an Initial Application to the Research Grants Council (RGC) through the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) Electronic System to obtain a HKPFS reference number by 1 December at Hong Kong Time 12:00 (GMT +8 hours).
  • Submission of full applications to PolyU should be made via the eAdmission System on or before 1 December at Hong Kong Time 23:59 (GMT +8 hours)

*For self-financed students or students admitted with other project grants, the deadline for submitting online applications is 1 December. For admission details, please contact potential supervisors.

 

Semester 2 Intake (January)

Semester 2 Intake is only open to individual applications upon the request of potential supervisors at CEE.

Scholarships and Tuition Fee (as of Sept 2018)

Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme

  • A monthly stipend of HK$25,100 (approximately US$3,200) for the entire normal study period
  • A conference and research related travel allowance of HK$12,600 (approximately US$1,600) per year for the entire normal study period
  • Waiving of tuition fees for the entire normal study period

CEE Studentship

  • A monthly stipend of HK$16,730 (approximately US$2,100)
  • A maximum of HK$20,000 (approximately US$2,560) conference grant for the entire normal study period
  • Students are required to pay an annual tuition fee of HK$42,100 (approximately US$5,400)

 

Tuition Waiver Scheme for Local Research Postgraduate (RPg) Students

Starting from 2018/19 academic year, the Hong Kong SAR Government will provide tuition waiver for all local (Hong Kong) students enrolled in UGC-funded RPg programmes. All local students enrolled in UGC-funded RPg programmes will be provided with tuition waiver.

Self-financed Students

  • Self-financed students shall pay an annual tuition fee of HK$84,200 (approximately US$10,800)
  • No monthly stipend would be provided
  • A maximum of HK$15,000 (approximately US$1,900) conference grant for the entire normal study period
