Degree and Sub-degree Programmes Overview
A brief introduction to all academic programmes offered by the Department is given below for easy reference. More information can be found in the section on Academic Programmes.
- BEng (Honours) Degree Programme in Civil Engineering (4 years full time)
This credit-based Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Degree Programme in Civil Engineering is designed to provide students with a broad-based and high quality interdisciplinary education in areas of environmental, geotechnical, hydraulic, structural and transportation engineering as well as construction management. This professional programme aims to nurture students as all-round civil engineers who are ready to work on engineering projects with commercial, social, legal and political complexities.
Full accreditation has been granted to the programme by The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). Graduates are eligible for coporate membership of the HKIE after gaining appropriate training.
- BEng (Honours) Degree Programme in Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Development (4 years full time)
Rapid urbanisation and infrastructure development will continue in Hong Kong and Mainland China in the next decade. Environmental protection and sustainable development will become the central focus of the long-term development in the region. Professionals in the field of environment and sustainable development will be in high demand. This programme is the first of its kind offered by Hong Kong institutions, with emphasis on both environment and sustainable development.
In addition to knowledge of environmental engineering and management, economics, sustainable urban development and public policy are adequately covered in this programme. Graduates of this programme will be able to devise practical solutions to environmental problems as well as to contribute to policy formulation which will lead to sustainable development. We prepare students for careers as environmental engineers and sustainable development professionals in different sectors, such as government departments, professional consultants, and management firms.
Full accreditation has been granted for the 4-year BEng (Hons) Degree Programme in Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Development by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). Graduates of this programme will be qualified for Scheme A training of the Environmental Discipline and Logistics & Transportation Discipline of HKIE.
Graduates of this programme are expected to be qualified for Corporate Membership of HKIE after appropriate trainings.

- BSc (Honours) Degree Programme in Environmental and Occupational Safety & Health (2 years full time)
The EOSH programme covers two contemporary areas in Hong Kong: environment and occupational safety & health. Through studying the Programme, students can identify, develop and apply good EOSH professional practices and technologies based on sound scientific principles and legislative requirements. EOSH Programme serves to train competent environmental and occupational safety & health graduates for the demand in these fields. It is the only undergraduate degree programme in safety and health offered by local universities for the construction industry.
On completion of this EOSH Programme, graduates can fulfill the academic requirements for registration as Registered Safety Officer (RSO) with the Labour Department, HKSAR and as Environmental Officer (EO) for government contracts. In addition, they can obtain the membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health of the United Kingdom (IOSH).
- BEng (Honours) Degree Programme in Structural and Fire Safety Engineering (4 years full time)
This credit-based Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Degree Programme in Structural and Fire Safety Engineering is the first of its kind offered by local universities, including required core subjects of both structural and fire engineering disciplines. It is designed to respond to the increasing demand for engineering professionals with both structural and fire engineering qualifications arising from the Fire Service (Amendment) Ordinance 2017 and the aging building stocks in Hong Kong. There are similar demands in many well-developed cities in the world because of increased concerns on safety in new and existing buildings with respect to structural resistance and fire protection.
- Higher Diploma in Civil Engineering (2 years full time)
This credit-based Higher Diploma Programme in Civil Engineering is designed to provide students with a broad-based and interdisciplinary education in areas of environmental, geotechnical, hydraulic, structural and transportation engineering as well as construction management. This professional programme aims to nurture students as all-round civil engineering technologists. It also provides students with a sound education background for pursuit of higher levels of study.
Interim recognition has been granted to the programme by The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). Graduates satisfy the academic requirements of Associate Membership of the HKIE.
