Professor Xiang-dong LI and his team wrote a comment in Nature on Global Air Pollution and Human Health
Invited by Nature, Prof. Xiang-dong LI (Chair Professor of Environmental Science and Technology and Associate Dean of FCE) and his team, Dr Ling JIN (Research Assistant Professor of CEE) and Prof. Hai-dong KAN (Fudan University School of Public Health) wrote a comment article entitled "Air Pollution: a global problem needs local fixes".
The team identified a globally important but overlooked issue, i.e., people worldwide exposed to similar mass concentrations of airborne fine particulate matter (PM2.5) have different health consequences. To reveal the myth, the team urged a new way of thinking and strategies to find and reduce the critical toxic ingredients of PM2.5 cocktails instead of focusing on its mass concentration, which is no longer sufficient to link toxicity to health effects. The invitation was extended from Nature's comment desk based on the recent work of Prof Li's group (e.g., Environ. Sci. Technol., 2019, 53, 2881-2891; Environ. Sci. Technol., 2019, 53, 963-972).
