Programme Introduction

This credit-based Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Degree Programme in Sustainable Structural and Fire Engineering is the first of its kind offered by local universities, including required core subjects of both structural and fire engineering disciplines. It is designed to respond to the increasing demand for engineering professionals with both structural and fire engineering qualifications arising from the Fire Service (Amendment) Ordinance 2017 and the aging building stocks in Hong Kong. There are similar demands in many well-developed cities in the world because of increased concerns on safety in new and existing buildings with respect to structural resistance and fire protection.

Programme Features

This programme, jointly offered by Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) and Department of Building Services Engineering (BSE), with CEE as the programme host department, has the following features:

  • Four-year full-time comprehensive programme with a wide range of core subjects of the structural and fire engineering disciplines;
  • A unique undergraduate programme which combines the essential elements of the safety, sustainability and fire protection of structures;
  • Opportunity to study abroad for 1-2 semesters in subsidized exchange programmes at internationally renowned universities;
  • Practical training modules in the technologically advanced Industrial Centre of the University;
  • Summer industrial placement in Hong Kong, Mainland China or overseas between the third-and fourth-year of the programme;
  • Scholarships available for students with excellent academic performance.

Programme Objectives and Aims

Objectives

We prepare students as professional structural engineers and fire engineers. More specifically, the objectives of the programme are:

  1. To train students to master the fundamental principles, analytical and experimental techniques and design methodology of structural, fire, and geotechnical engineering for identifying and solving sustainable structural and fire engineering problems within constraints;
  2. To develop students' abilities to function in teams and communicate effectively through drawing, calculations, and written and verbal presentation;
  3. To train students to appreciate the managerial, social and ethical responsibilities of professional engineers; and
  4. To train students to appreciate the need for life-long learning and keeping abreast of current issues.

Aims

The programme aims to educate students as competent engineers who are able to design new buildings and maintain and retrofit existing buildings with technical knowledge of structural engineering as well as both active and passive fire protection technologies.

Entrance Requirements

Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Qualification

Satisfy the University’s General Entrance Requirement with the minimum level requirements for the 4 core subjects and 2 elective subjects as 332233 respectively:

4 core subjects + 2 elective subjects (including M1/M2)

Preferred Elective Subjects:

  • Physics
  • Combined Science with Physics
  • Extended Modules of Mathematics

Professional Recognition

Full accreditation of the programme by The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) will be sought. Graduates of this programme will then be qualified for Scheme A training of Structural Discipline and Fire Discipline of HKIE.
