Summary

Title: Sense-making in corpus-based translation studies: With reference to Hongloumeng translations

Date: October 11, 2022

Time: 15:00 - 16:15

Abstract

This talk will take issue with the enthusiasm about the quantification or the so-called ‘magic of numbers’ in corpus-assisted translation research. I would argue that the corpus and the numbers it generates are merely tools. The real essence of corpus-analysis of translator’s style lies necessarily in the sense-making of the statistics obtained via the corpus analysis. Two best known English translations of Hongloumeng will be analysed to illustrate the process of sense-making.
