BRE Student Winning CIOB(HK) Outstanding Student Awards (2011-12)

In the Outstanding Student Awards (2011-12) organized by the Chartered Institute of Building (Hong Kong), one alumni of the Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE) was rewarded for her final year dissertation announced on 10 October 2012. Under the bachelor degree category, Ms Wong Lai Ching, Cherry was one of the three prize winners with her feasibility study of extensive green roof applications in Hong Kong new private residential buildings. She was a full-time surveying degree graduate in June 2012 and was supervised by Dr Daniel W.M. Chan, Associate Professor of BRE. The primary goals of these awards are to promote excellence in project management in construction and to recognize students with outstanding academic achievements. The awards were based on the quality of student’s own work for final year project/dissertation completed in the academic year 2011-12, the contents of which should be focused on the pertinent aspects of construction project management. The winner received an award certificate and a prize cheque of HK$4,000 at the CIOB(HK) Annual Dinner 2012 held on 19 October 2012.

BRE Dissertation Students Winning the HKICM Construction Management Research Awards

 In the first ever construction management research awards sponsored by the Hong Kong Institute of Construction Managers (HKICM), 3 alumnae of the Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE) were rewarded for their final year dissertations. At the master's degree level, Ms. Choi Nga Yee, Tracy was the Champion with her MPhil investigation of the current application and future development of the Pay for Safety Scheme (PFSS) in the Hong Kong construction industry. Another MSc in Project Management student, Ms. Yiu Sze Nga, Nicole received a Merit award for her study of heat stress management in the construction industry. Both of them were supervised by Dr Daniel W.M. Chan, Associate Professor of BRE. At the bachelor's degree level, Ms. Lee Mun Wai, Wendy was given a Merit award for her study of personal knowledge management practices for construction professionals in the public sector of Hong Kong. She was supervised by Dr Patrick S.W. Fong, Associate Professor of BRE. The awards aim to provide an open competitive platform for students to demonstrate their knowledge and share their learning, promoting the profession of construction management at the same time. The champion received a certificate and a cash coupon of HK$10,000 at the HKICM 15th Anniversary Dinner held on 6 September 2012.

BRE Students Winning the HKIE-SSC Student Dissertation/Project Competition Awards 2012

Two 2012 graduates of the Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE) were rewarded for their final-year dissertations during the Student Project Competition Awards 2012 organized by the Safety Specialist Committee (SSC) of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). Under the Master Degree Group, Ms CHOI Nga Yee Tracy was the Champion-CIC Award with her part-time MPhil investigation of the current application and future development of the Pay for Safety Scheme (PFSS) in the Hong Kong construction industry. Under the Bachelor Degree Group, another 2012 full-time BSc(Hons) in Surveying graduate, Ms LAW Ka Man Carman received a Merit award for her feasibility study of implementing the Pay for Safety Scheme (PFSS) in the private sector building projects in Hong Kong. Both of the winners were supervised by Dr Daniel W.M. Chan (陳煒明博士), Associate Professor of BRE. The competition aimed at promoting safety and health in engineering and science regime; and providing an open and competitive platform for engineering students to demonstrate their engineering capabilities and share the learning process in safety and health regime. The Champion winner received an award certificate and a cash coupon of HK$2,000 during the HKIE-SSC Annual Dinner 2012-2013 launched on 11 January 2013 at the YMCA Hotel, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, and the Merit winner with an award certificate.

BRE Students Winning the HKIS Dissertation/Thesis Awards for Postgraduate Students

  In the dissertation/thesis awards for postgraduate students 2012 organized by the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (HKIS), two alumnae of the Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE) were rewarded for their final year dissertations announced on 24 September 2012. In the Master of Philosophy (MPhil)'s degree category, Ms. Choi Nga Yee, Tracy was the prize winner with her investigation of the current application and future development of the Pay for Safety Scheme (PFSS) in the Hong Kong construction industry. In the Master of Science (MSc)'s degree category, another MSc in Construction and Real Estate student, Mr. Zhou You, Joe received an award for his study of application of solar chimney and earth tube systems for BEAM Plus and LEED assessments. They were supervised by Dr Daniel W.M. Chan, Associate Professor of BRE and Dr Ni Meng, Associate Professor of BRE, respectively.   The purpose of the awards aims to promote research and to reward the efforts of the students. The awards were based on merits in the research contribution to the industry, innovation and application to the surveying profession. Each of the winners will receive an award certificate and a prize cheque of HK$1,000 at the HKIS Research Award Presentation Ceremony to be held later.

BRE Students Winning the OSHC Best Dissertation/Project Awards 2012 (Postgraduate Category)

The dissertation reports of two 2012 graduates from the Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE), Ms CHOI Nga Yee Tracy and Ms YIU Sze Nga Nicole, were adjudicated as the one of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Best Project Award 2012 winners under the category of Postgraduate Degree Programme organized by the statutory Occupational Safety and Health Council (OSHC). The Award aimed at encouraging post-secondary students in Hong Kong to appreciate the importance of occupational safety and health in their studies. The OSHC offers a maximum of ten awards annually, based on the relevance, quality and originality of the submissions. The two graduates received an award certificate and a cash prize of HK$3,000 during the Good Housekeeping Forum and Award Presentation Ceremony 2012 launched on 18 December 2012 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (Old Wing).   The winning dissertation report of Ms Tracy Choi, being a part-time MPhil graduate in 2012, was entitled “Investigation the Current Application and Exploring the Future Development of Pay for Safety Scheme (PFSS) in Hong Kong Construction Industry”. The dissertation report of Ms Nicole Yiu, who is a part-time graduate of MSc in Project Management programme, was named as “A Critical Study of Heat Stress Management in Hong Kong Construction Industry”. The two winner s were supervised by Dr Daniel W.M. Chan (陳煒明博士), Associate Professor of the BRE Department.   Moreover, Ms HON Ka Hung Carol was selected as one of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Research Student Scholarship 2009 winners under the category of Postgraduate Degree Programme by OSHC. Her PhD thes is entitled “Relationships between Safety Climate and Safety Performance of Repair, Maintenance, Minor Alteration and Addition (RMAA) Works” was supervised by Professor Albert P.C. Chan of BRE. Similarly, Ms CHOI Nga Yee Tracy was also adjudicated as one of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Research Student Scholarship 2009 winners under the same category by OSHC based on her MPhilthesis. The Scholarship is conferred in recognition of the successful completion of the research project and dissertation report of those outstanding research students in Hong Kong.
