Research Teams Led by Prof. Albert Chan & Dr Patrick Lam Receiving HKIPM Awards

Congratulations  to  Prof. Albert  Chan,  Dr  Patrick  Lam and  the irrespective research teams  on  receiving  the  awards  at  the  Annual  Dinner  of  the  Hong  Kong Institute  of Project Management's (HKIPM) in early April 2015!   Prof.  Albert  Chan's  team  won  the  Project  Management  Achievement  Award  2014(Research) for a paper on 'Health and Safety Measures for Working in Hot Weather' while  Dr  Patrick  Lam's  team  was  awarded  in  the  same  category  for  'A  Buildability Assessment  System  for  the  Scheme  Design  Stage  of  Building  Projects  in  Hong Kong'.   More about Prof.Albert Chan: Ir Prof Albert PC CHAN

The Occupational Safety and Health Council's Best Project Award - Dr Yi Wen, BRE PhD Graduate

Dr Wen Yi was honored at the Best Project Award Prize Presentation Ceremony organized bythe Occupational Safety and Health Council on 4Feb2015.A recent PhD graduate of the Department of Building and Real Estate,Dr Yi Wen received the Best Project Award 2014 for her  project  “Modeling  Rebar  Labor  Productivity  in  Hot  Weather,”  in  which  a  set  of  good practices and indices to ensure the health and safety of site personnel working in hot weather was  developed.  Her  PhD  thesis  of  the  same  title  was  supervised  by  Prof.  Albert  Chan.Moreover, Dr  Wen  Yi was  selected  as  one  of  the  Occupational  Safety  and Health  (OSH) Research  Student  Scholarship  2012 winners  under  the  category  of Postgraduate  Degree Programme  by  OSHC.  The  Scholarship  is conferred  in recognition  of  the  successful completion  of  the  research  project  and dissertation  report  of  those  outstanding  research students in Hong Kong.

Prof. Heng LI's Securing 'Innovation and Technology Fund'

Bravo! Prof. Heng  Li  and  his  research  team  have successfully  secured  a  huge funding  for  their project ‘Location-based  Technologies  for  Asset  Tracking  and Risk    Management’  under  the  Innovation  and  Technology  Fund of     the Government.This success is  very  encouraging to  the  research  team  in  support of their endeavors on the  advance  in  the technology‘Proactive  Construction Management System’. This system brings a new chapter to not  only the construction industry but also the public sector in terms of risk management.   Successful Story of PCMS in Construction Industry In  2012,Prof.  Heng  Li,Chair  Professor of  Construction  Informatics and  his research team developed a construction safety system,   namely‘ Proactive Construction  Management  System  (PCMS)’that combines  the  use  of  Building Information   Modeling  (BIM)  and  location-based  technology  to   promote  the standard of construction safety and enhance project operational efficiency.This PCMS can generate alert  signals from  the  tag  device  attached  on  the  helmet of construction workers when they are in a dangerous zone of the construction site so  that they can leave the zone immediately.It can make sure workers’ safety and avoid construction accidents.   Introduction of PCMS to Hong Kong Police Force To sustain the success of this safety system,the research team introduced PCMS to a  special  unit  of Hong  Kong  Police  Force,‘Disaster  Victim  Identification  Unit(DVIU)’in 2015.The DVIU carries out victim identification service  and provides support   for  disaster  rescue   operations. As one of  the  most  technologically advanced  DVIUs in the  world,it always improves  its efficiency with the  latest technologies.   PCMS helps DVIU control the   property   handling,assist in deployment    for disaster victim identification and give operational support for major incidents in Hong Kong.With a view to speeding up the whole victim identification process,the  research  team  hopes this  innovative technology can further  enhance  the Police’s efficiency and accuracy in handling a large number of properties as well as tracking their deployment.   More about Prof. Heng Li : Prof Heng LI  

Anti Heat

Research on ‘Anti-heat Stress Clothing for Construction Workers in Hot & Humid Weather’ Receiving Dean’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Technology Transfer 2015

Bravo! Under Prof.  Albert  Chan’s leadership,his research team’s project ‘Anti-heat Stress  Clothing  for  Construction  Workers  in  Hot  &  Humid Weather’ has recently won‘Dean’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Technology Transfer 2015’.   This project titled “Anti-heat  Stress  Clothing  (AHSC)  for  Construction  Workers  in  Hot and Humid Weather” is funded by a grant from the Research Grants Council of the Hong Kong  Special  Administrative  Region, China. This  multi-disciplinary  study  involved demonstrable  experts  and  professionals  from  the  fields  of  occupational  safety  and health, textile sciences, and biological and exercise sciences.   This brilliant research team is composed oft he elites from the Department of Building and  Real  Estate  (BRE)and Institute  of  Textile  and  Clothing  (ITC), PolyU, and  the Technological  and  Higher  Education  Institute  of  Hong  Kong  (THEi),  HKU  School  of Professional  and  Continuing  Education  (HKUSPACE),  and  the  Hong  Kong  Institute  of Education (HKIEd). More member details are available in the table on page3.   Cater for Industrial Need Construction workers are susceptible to heat stress while working in a hot environment. Wearing  appropriate  summer  clothes  is  one  of  personal  protective  controls  to  protect workers  from  heat  stress.  However,  there  is  a  lack  of  definite  industry  standards  for identifying  the  appropriate  summer  clothes.Meanwhile,  scientific  research  to  design such clothes for construction workers is spare. To bridge these gaps, the research team takes   initiatives   to   design   and   engineer  the   appropriate summer clothes to help workers combat heat stress.   AHSC’s Outstanding Features 1.Light and thin 2.UV protection 3.Superior capacity in sweat absorption and releasing after chemical treatment 4.Meshed warp knit fabric on the side of the body promoting evaporation transfer 5.Porous reflective strips balancing air permeability and visibility 6.Loose-fit design improving mobility and wearing comfort 7.Different front and back design improving visibility and safety   Benefits to Workers and Industry Wearing  the  AHSC  with  excellent thermal  and  moisture  performance  may  encourage people  not  to  take  off  these  clothes  in  the  heat.  So  it  not  only  protects  workers  from ultraviolet radiation but also provides comfortable micro climate environment. As it can be  expected,  the  well-being  of  construction  workers  will  be  improved  when  they  are willingness   to wear the AHSC when working in hot weather. Ranked 2nd in the ‘Built Environment and Design’ by the University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP) 2014-15

We are very excited that PolyU is ranked the 2nd in the subject ‘Built Environment  and  Design’  by  the  University  Ranking  by  Academic Performance  (URAP)  for  the  year  '2014  to  2015'.  This  is  our  second consecutive year for reaching this high rank.   We shall keep our best endeavours to take on new challenges ahead!   In  2009,University  Ranking  by  Academic  Performance  (URAP)  Research Laboratory   was   established   at   Informatics   Institute   of   Middle   East Technical  University.URAP aims at developing a  ranking  system  for  the world  universities  based  on  academic  performances in  terms  of their scholarly publications’ quality and quantity.Since 2010,the annual World Ranking of 2000 Higher Education Institutions has been released.   More :http://www.urapcenter.org/2014/buil.php?q=MS0yNTA%3D

HKIPM-PolyU Joint CPD Seminar on HKIPM and apfpm Awards 2013

 The Hong Kong Institute of Project Management (HKIPM) Project Management Achievement Awards (HKIPM Awards) is held each year in Hong Kong, and the awards are aimed to provide an opportunity for organisations and project managers in different disciplines showing their project success amongst their counterparts. The winners under each category of HKIPM Awards will be endorsed by HKIPM to submit to the international judging panel of the Asia Pacific Federation of Project Management Awards (apfpm Awards). The seminar covered the planning ideas, design concepts, green features, construction challenges, maintenance issues, interactions with different key stakeholders at various stages, success story behind each project, as well as the future development trend of public housing projects in Hong Kong. The seminar was very informative, clearly presented and thought-provoking. It was well received by about 200 registered attendees, and ended with some interesting questions from the audience and insightful answers from the guest speakers.
