Dr Tony Linwei CHEN

Research Assistant Professor

Biography

Dr Chen holds the position of Research Assistant Professor with the Department of Biomedical Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Bioengineering lab, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School in 2023, where he focused on the development and application of machine learning models for the prediction of adverse events following joint arthroplasty. Before that, Dr Chen earned a doctoral degree in Biomedical Engineering from PolyU in 2020, establishing himself as a leading researcher in simulating lower limb movements through a dynamic/explicit finite element approach. Dr Chen has a medical background and received orthopedic-oriented residency training. He obtained his M.Phil. in Orthopedics and M.B. in 2014 and 2011, respectively. In between his studentships, Dr Chen held several research-supportive positions in different research units at PolyU.

Dr Chen’s work centers on the musculoskeletal biomechanics underlying normal and injured movement control during gait and common sports activities. He is interested in parsing lower limb pathomechanics and medical solutions using a variety of modeling approaches, including machine learning, finite element analyses, and musculoskeletal modeling. Dr Chen has amassed 50+ publications in prestigious journals in sports science, orthopedics, and rehabilitation engineering, such as Journal of Sports and Health Science, Journal of Arthroplasty, and Journal of Orthopaedic Translation. He also received several paper awards at conferences for recognition of his research output and achievement.
