APSS1A21/M/U/V Service Leadership

 

Award
The subject received the Bronze Award under the category of “Ethical leadership” in the Wharton-QS Stars Reimagine Education Awards 2016 for its success in fostering and encouraging leadership among students and ensuring that students are aware of the ethical implications of leadership. 

In 2018, the Leadership and Intrapersonal Development (LIPD) Team of APSS has been honoured with the 2018 University Grants Committee (UGC) Teaching Award in recognition of the Team’s remarkable contributions to teaching and learning in offering the leadership subjects including the above.

 

Objectives
The objectives of this subject are to enable students to:

  1. Learn the basic models of leadership with reference to the service sector;

 

  1. Understand the basic leadership attributes intrinsic to effective service leaders, including leadership competences, moral character, and caring disposition;
  1. Reflect on their own service leadership qualities, including leadership competences, moral character, and caring disposition;

 

  1. Learn to develop and apply the basic qualities of an effective service leader; and
  1. Cultivate an appreciation of the importance of Service Leadership to the development and wellness of oneself, other people and the whole society.

Blended Learning (in S2 only)
In S2 of 2018/19, the subject will be offered under a UGC-funded project entitled “The Responsive University: Appreciating Content Sharing in General Education”.  The participating universities include HKU, CUHK, PolyU and HKUST. 

The subject will offer 100 quota for 25 non-PolyU and 75 PolyU students who will take the subject in a blended mode with the combination of both e-learning and face-to-face activities. This technology-enriched teaching method will provide students with a new learning experience and an enjoyable learning journey.

Outbound Trips and Fees (Non-local Trips in Summer Term only)
Students taking the subject conducted in Xian in summer term are required to pay a non-refundable outbound fee of HK$1,500 (subject to revision) to cover part of the expenses such as airfare and accommodation expenses for the outbound trips despite the availability of financial support from the University.

The subject will be conducted in an intensive mode in Xian for two weeks and students will be required to submit the term paper in around mid-August 2019.

 

Scholarship
There are totally 2 quota of scholarship at HK$5,000 each to be awarded by Wofoo Foundation for PolyU students taking the subject in Hong Kong.  One quota will be offered in S2 and S3 respectively.
