Dr. Xiaomin LI, Assistant Professor, has been reappointed as Associate Editor of Journal of Social and Personal Relationships (Q1, Scopus). She was first appointed as Associate Editor since July 2021. Congratulations!

Engaging Age-friendly City Ambassadors in Infusion Active Ageing Education for University Students (HK$1.95 million)


Dr. Xue BAI, Director of the Institute of Active Ageing and Associate Professor, has received a donation of HK$1.95 million from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust to sustain the impact of the Age-friendly City Project for nurturing age-friendly students.




Empowering through Learning - Parent-child Language Programme for Junior Non-Chinese Speaking Students (HK$405,975)


Dr. Iris LO, Assistant Professor, has been awarded an external competitive grant of HK$405,975 from Oxfam Hong Kong to conduct a research to examine the issue related to ethnic minority children and youth’s social integration in Hong Kong.




Two Interdisciplinary Large External Projects (totalling HK$1.4 million)


Prof. Sylvia CHEN, Associate Dean of Faculty of Health and Social Sciences and Professor, and Prof. Juan CHEN, Professor, were successful in their applications for the 2021-22 Interdisciplinary Large External Project Scheme.  The titles of these projects are:

  • Enhancing Intergroup Relations and Promoting Social Integration: A Multicultural Acquisition Approach by Prof. Sylvia Chen (APSS)
  • Quality of Local Governance in Urbanizing China by Prof. Chen Juan (APSS)

Winner of 2021 Kooiman Best Paper Award


Dr. Yanto CHANDRA, Associate Professor, was selected as the winner of the 2021 Kooiman Best Paper Award for his co-authored paper ‘Social entrepreneurship in the context of disaster recovery: Organizing for public value creation’ in Public Management Review (Q1, Scopus).

Second APSS International Scholar Talk Series


Prof. Rebecca ANG, Professor at the Psychology and Child & Human Development Academic Group, National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, gave a talk on February 11, 2022.


After the talk, Prof. Daniel SHEK, Associate Vice President (Undergraduate Programme) and Chair Professor, and Dr. Ann LI, Assistant Professor, joined the discussion on reclaiming teachers’ psychological wellbeing under the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 120 participants attended the online presentation.




Third APSS International Scholar Talk Series

Prof. Johanna MAIR, Professor of Organization, Strategy and Leadership at the Hertie School in Berlin and also a renowned scholar in the field of social enterprise, was invited on February 24, 2022 to deliver a speech at the APSS International Scholar Talk Series.


Mr. Warren LUK, CEO of The Good Lab, served as the Moderator of the talk. Over 60 participants attended the online presentation.





APSS School Talk to Secondary School Students and Teachers

Dr. Kong YAM and Dr. Raymond TAM, Co-Programme Leaders of BA (Hons) Scheme in Applied Social Sciences and Teaching Fellows of Social Work, delivered a school talk to S.4 to S.6 students and Secondary school teachers on January 26, 2022. 




 The talk introduced degree programmes offered by APSS, information about career paths and admission interview tips. The talk also featured student sharing. Over 190 participants attended the online school talk.




APSS Talk on Child Protection


Ms. Florence WONG, former Social Work Officer of the Social Welfare Department, was invited to deliver a talk on March 17, 2022 about the rationale of child protection and daily precautions for child caregivers. Mr. Johnny IP, Manager (Youth & Child Care Services) of Yan Chai Hospital Social Services Department, and Dr. Kong YAM, Co-Programme Leader of BA (Hons) Scheme in Applied Social Sciences, served as the Moderators of the talk.


Both Ms. WONG and Mr. IP are our PolyU Alumni, and we are grateful to have their continuous support for APSS’ activities.




The talk was open to secondary school and tertiary students who were interested in the helping professions and taking care of children. Around 148 participants attended the online presentation.

Serving our Society

Outstanding athletes from APSS have lined up to share tips on sports and health to elderly participants of a self-health management programme, implemented by the Wong Tai Sin District Health Centre. The aim of the programme is to use various activities, such as online seminars and exercise demonstrations, to enhance the awareness of hypertension among residents of Wong Tai Sin district. The project was also supported by various organisations and institutions.

Social Work Student wins The Outstanding Students Award Scheme 2021

Mr. Sunny LAM, a Year-4 Undergraduate Student in Social Work, received our department’s Outstanding Student Award. He was awarded this prize for his academic excellence and involvement in extra-curricular activities and community service.


Sunny is one of the team captains of the PolyU Taekwondo Team. He was selected as the Champion of the Hong Kong Black Belt Taekwondo Competition in 2019.


Sunny is also an avid volunteer. In 2019, he received the Outstanding Service Award for Tertiary Students from the Hong Kong Outstanding Tertiary Students' Service Association. In 2020 and 2021, he received the HSBC Social Work Scholarship. Outside of Hong Kong. He served as a volunteer team leader in the IDEA Service Trip to Cambodia, and helped with the Vision Screening Project of PolyU School of Optometry as a student helper in 2019.


Congratulations to him on this achievement! 




Funding from the PolyU Student Entrepreneurial Proof-of-Concept Funding Scheme 2022


A team of BA (Hons) Social Policy and Social Entrepreneurship students (formed by Mr. Nicholas WONG, Mr. Po Kit TANG, and Ms. Yu Hing KAM) received funding from the PolyU Student Entrepreneurial Proof-of-Concept Funding Scheme 2022, organised by the Knowledge Transfer and Entrepreneurship Office. The team was led by Dr. Yanto CHANDRA, Associate Professor. Their winning project, ‘Ethnic Sense - Minority to Diversity’, focuses on the needs of ethnic minorities in Hong Kong. It aims to tackle the stigmatisation against ethnic minorities and to provide sufficient support to ethnic minority shop owners.

Annual Best Paper Awards for Research Postgraduate Students in 2021/22

Ms. Jiwen ZHANG (supervisor: Dr. Herman LO) and Mr. Alex CHAN (supervisor: Prof. Elsie YAN) were the winners of the Annual Best Paper Awards for Research Postgraduate Students (2021/22) this year. Alex and Jiwen delivered presentations of their award-winning papers in an online seminar on March 2, 2022.
