In this website, we highlight the academic strengths of the Department of Applied Mathematics and some of its significant contibutions to the University.

AMA has 50 academic staff in three discipline groups: Applied Statistics and Financial Mathematics, Engineering and Computational Mathematics, Operations Research and Applied Optimization. The Department offers high quality undergraduate programmes (BSc (Hons) in Investment Science, BSc (Hons) in Data Science & Analytics and BSc (Hons) in Statistics and Computing), Minor programme in Applied Mathematics, postgraduate programmes (MSc/PgD in Applied Mathematics for Science and Technology and MSc/PgD in Operational Research and Risk Analysis), and Research Postgraduate Programme (PhD/MPhil ) in Applied Mathematics. AMA also provides service teaching in mathematics and statistics to other departments in the university, complementing students' majors and meeting students' needs. In 2017/18, AMA offers 32 service teaching subjects to 5622 students.

The Department encourages academic staff to conduct research that has high impact and important applications in engineering, economics and science. Staff in AMA have over 670 papers published in top level journals in applied mathematics, serve in the editorial boards of 34 major journals listed in Journal Citation Reports, and have 52 on-going RGC research projects supported by the Hong Kong Research Grant Council. We conduct joint research actively with excellent researchers in many prestigious universities/laboratories around the world. Moreover, AMA has strong regional connections with business and industry sector. In the past few years, we have strengthened our collaborations on applied mathematics with the Chinese Mainland via the AMSS-PolyU Joint Research Institute established jointly by PolyU and the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In October 2017, PolyU established the University Research Facility in Big Data Analytics, which is jointly managed by AMA and Department of Computing. The Department will facilitate multidisciplinary research in big data.

This website highlights the academic strengths of the Department. I hope you will enjoy your visit online.
