In 1972, the Department of Mathematics & Science (now Department of Applied Mathematics, "AMA") was established at The Hong Kong Polytechnic (the forerunner of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University).

Over the past 45 years, our Department has nurtured more than 6,000 graduates in mathematics and statistics related disciplines with a wide range of programmes. They range from Certificates and Higher Diplomas in the early years of the Department to BSc, MPhil and PhD degrees in more recent years. With their academic training, many of the graduates make significant contributions to society, both locally and in the Chinese Mainland and overseas.

The Department has expanded to 51 academic staff and 16 support staff, offering high quality undergraduate, postgraduate and research Programmes in Applied Mathematics.

The Department encourages academic staff to conduct research that has high impact and important applications in engineering, economics and science. Staff in AMA have over 100 papers published in top level journals in applied mathematics each year, serve in the editorial boards of 30 major journals listed in Journal Citation Reports, and have more than 30 on-going RGC research projects supported by the Hong Kong Research Grant Council. With our strengthened collaborations on applied mathematics with the Chinese Mainland via the AMSS-PolyU Joint Research Institute in the past few years, we reaffirm our commitment to academic excellence with relentless dedication and unflagging efforts in research.
