SIAM PolyU Student Chapter Activity:Forum on innovative personal and academic development with Prof. Terry Rockafellar

The student chapter was honored to have Prof. Terry Rockafellar joining the forum on innovative personal and academic development. The event was held on the Friday, 18th of December, after the professor gave a Distinguish Lecture on 4th Workshop on Optimization and Risk Management, held at PolyU from 16th to 17th of December.

During the forum, Prof. Rockafeller gave some very instructive suggestions on how to achieve academic success as well as personal fulfillment. He also shared his own experience, not only the glory of his success, but also the bitter and less-bright side of his career. The most inspiring aspect he kept emphasizing was the way to stay passionate and motivated: have fun in your life and enjoy your work and study. He also explained his vision on active research and study, which involves much more than answering questions and solving problems: it is the individual's critical thinking and question rising that would most facilitate one's academic and personal development.

Professor Rockafellar also shared his passion on outdoor activities by participating in the hiking with a group of visitors, staff and research students on the following Saturday.
