“A thankful heart is indispensable for scaling new heights”

A native of Hong Kong, Mr Michael Ross spent the prime years of his life in his second home – Shanghai – where he built an illustrious career. As the  Vice Chairman of Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group), Michael has made outstanding contributions to Shanghai’s economic and social development, for which  he was awarded the highest honour by the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, the Magnolia Award.

His venture in Shanghai started in 1997 when he followed the Senior Chairman of CP Group, Mr Dhanin Chearavanont to the city and opened “CP Lotus” – the first large-scale supermarket, covering an area of more than 20,000 square metres in the mainland. The idea soon became popular. Now with more than 100 branches, “CP Lotus” has led the growth and development of the retail market in Pudong.

Amid the mounting threat posed by online shops, Michael managed to help the group capitalise on its strength and branch into new business including commercial real estate and corporation management. He took further steps by embracing innovation, one of the six values held by the group, and launched new retail modes, integrating online and offline activities.

Under his leadership, the Super Brand Mall on the banks of Huangpu River, was honoured with various accolades including the Top Ten Enterprises in Pudong, 2018 Commercial Transformation Innovative Model Enterprise, and 2017 Outstanding Management of Chinese Shopping Mall awards. He  ranks as an acclaimed entrepreneur and business leader due to his foresight and distinguished leadership.

Although he built his career in Shanghai, he regards Hong Kong, a city he loves, as his home. One of Michael’s mottoes is “Thanking with Gratitude”. Driven by the thinking that “a thankful heart is indispensable for scaling new heights”, he not only strives for excellence in his work, but also actively takes part in public duties, serving the society out of gratitude.

He is particularly thankful to the nation for giving him the once in a lifetime opportunity to develop his stellar career, and to his alma mater PolyU for nurturing his entrepreneurial spirit.

All along, Michael has been proud to be a graduate of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at PolyU. He recalled that his teachers often reminded students to “Get your hands dirty”- meaning putting what is learned into practice, an attribute of PolyU students. Michael is a vivid example of a wise learner and practitioner.
