Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Are there any preferred subjects for admission score calculation?        

A1: Yes, preferred subjects will be given the highest weighting, while other subjects will be given appropriate weightings depending on their relevance to the scheme.

Preferred subjects included:

  • English Language
  • Mathematics
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Combined Science: Biology + Chemistry 
  • Combined Science: Biology + Physics
  • Combined Science: Physics + Chemistry


Q2: If I have not taken the preferred science subject(s), will I still be considered and will there be any penalty? 

A2: There is no compulsory subject requirement for our scheme, and no penalty will be imposed for amittees who have not studied the science subjects. However, they may need to take additional relevant underpinning subjects after admission so as to get the necessary foundation knowledge.

Q3: How is the admission score calculated?

A3: The best 5 HKDSE subjects (after subject weightings have been applied) will be taken into account and converted to admission score point.

Q4: Will I be invited for an admission interview?

A4: Applicants may be invited to attend an admission interview when necessary. You will be notified of the interview arrangements by email once shortlisted.

Q5: When do I need to indicate my programme choice if admitted to the scheme?

A5: Students will be asked to rank their major choices after the second semester, and are expected to have chosen a specific major programme by the end of the third semester.

Q6: Will I be required to attend an interview for admission to my chosen major? 

A6: Interviews may be arranged when necessary. The decision to admit a student to a major will be made by the department based on the student’s choice, overall GPA of year one study, and/or interview result.

Q7: Can I change my programme choice after commencement of the major study? 

A7: Students may apply to their programme leader for change of programme, such applications will be considered on individual merits and case-by-case basis.

Q8: Are there any internship or exchange opportunities for students?

A8: We offer over 50 exchange and overseas/ local summer internship opportunities at renowned institutions, government bureaus and relevant industries each year. The Department will call for applications annually and any full-time undergraduate students fulfilling the minimum requirements on CGPA and English language may apply.
