Professor Yu Ching Man, Simon



Dr. Yu obtained his BEng(Hons) ACGI and PhD DIC from the Dept of Mechanical Engineering, Imperial College, London in 1987 and 1991 respectively. He joined the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore immediately after his graduation as Lecturer. He became Senior Lecturer in 1996 and Associate Professor in 2000. He was also very involved in the university administration since 2000:  Principal Staff Officer (President’s Office) from 2000-2003, University Council member from 2001-2003, Vice Dean, Admission Office (2003-2006) and Head, Division of Aerospace Engineering, School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (2008-2013). He moved over to the newly established (the fifth) public university in Singapore, the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) as Professor and Programme Director in 2013, to establish one of the first engineering degree programmes offered solely by the university. 


He has published more than 200 research papers in archive journals and conferences, mainly in the area of fluid mechanics. 12 MEng (equivalent to MPhil in the U.K. system) and 19 PhD students have successfully graduated under his supervision. He managed to secure more than SGD 50 million external grant during his tenure in the Nanyang Technological University, especially during the period as Head, Division of Aerospace Engineering. 


He holds a Visiting Professor appointment in the Dept of Architecture and Building Sciences, Xian Jiaotong University PRC from 2015. He is also the trainer for Holistic Gas Turbine Rolls Royce Aeroengine in Singapore since 2009.


He is elected as Council member, Institution of Engineers (IES) Singapore in 2018 and is appointed as a member in the Board of non-executive Directors, Singapore Bus Service Transit (SBST) in May 2018. 


He is a Chartered Engineer (U.K. and Singapore) and elected fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (U.K.), the Royal Aeronautical Society (U.K.) and the Institution of Engineers Singapore. He received the Long Service Award (Pingat Bakti Setia) in 2017 from the Republic of Singapore Government.
