Application for Admission to the Degree of Master of Philosophy or Doctor of Philosophy

The School invites high calibre students with evidence of academic excellence, research ability and good communication skills to apply for Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil) studies. Full-time PhD applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for the RGC Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS). Please visit the HKPFS webpage for details. Our HKPFS awardee has shared some words which can be viewed here.

Application period for submitting initial applications to the Research Grants Council (RGC) by the applicants for allocation of reference numbers: from 1 September 2021 to 1 December 2021.

Deadline for submission of full applications to PolyU: 1 December 2021 at 11:59 p.m. (Hong Kong Time)

Applicants for admission to our PhD programme via HKPFS will also concurrently be considered for other studentship schemes at PolyU.

Applications are invited from high calibre students with PhD offers from top universities in the world. Successful applicants are offered attractive scholarship package to pursue full-time PhD studies at SO. Consideration of applications is on rolling basis until all fellowship quotas are filled. A limited number of studentship places are available for full-time research postgraduate students. Students will be offered financial support, allowing them to focus fully on their studies. Granting of studentships/assistantships will be reviewed on an annual basis, subject to satisfactory performance. Recipients of studentships are required to provide support for teaching and scholarly activities. For more details, please click here .

Some projects are currently seeking research students. Interested parties are advised to contact the principal investigator by email.

The School has recently established a new route called the Resident Optometrist - Research for applicants who are interested in clinical research. Eligible candidate must be a graduate with an optometric qualification recognized by the Hong Kong Optometrists Board for Part I of the Optometrist Register. They should have good clinical performance in their optometric training. Research students via this route are required to provide quality teaching and eye care services with an appointment under the Residency Programme as well as devote oneself to a PhD study.

You are advised to contact our academic staff (click here for the list of staff) to jointly formulate a proposal. Application must be made online via PolyU eAdmission (please click here). A non-refundable and non-transferrable fee of HK$300 will be charged for each application. You must settle the application fee upon submission of your online application. Otherwise, your application will not be further processed.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited for presentations and interviews during which you will be expected to present your research proposal.
