PolyU cultivates green culture through film show and environmental lecture

Two promotional activities were held in November 2007. Both the film show on "An Inconvenient Truth" and the open lecture by Dr. Rebecca Lee Lok-sze attracted hundreds of students and staff members.

The documentary film presented the campaign on global warming run by former United States Vice-President Al Gore, one of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize winners. The open lecture by Dr. Lee, polar environment researcher and also an Outstanding PolyU Alumna, shared with the audience valuable information and insights on polar environmental protection.

Experience sharing seminar gathers departmental suggestions on environment

The Annual Experience Sharing Seminar for Departmental Health and Safety Officers and Departmental Environmental Coordinators was held successfully on 1 November, 2007 by the Health, Safety and Environment Office with over 70 participants.

Environmental issues were raised and discussed by many departmental representatives during the discussion sessions.

They shared suggestions on resource conservation measures, such as turning off lights and air-conditioning when not needed, promoting paperless office, discouraging unnecessary paper consumption by a charging scheme, and placing more recycling bins around the campus.

Promotional activities put forward include posting notices on toilet paper dispensers, enhancing environmental information on the web, and holding of ¡¥Environmental Week¡¦. Demand for more green roofs and indoor planting was also voiced out.

The Energy Management Sub-committee issues tips on energy saving

In line with the Energy Conservation Charter of the HKSAR Government, the Energy Management Sub-committee, after some collaborative discussion, has issued tips for energy conservation to achieve a greener campus:

Major tips are:
  • Setting room temperature of air-conditioned space in summer months at 25.5¢XC wherever applicable;
  • Lowering blinds and keeping doors and windows closed to help reduce energy consumption;
  • Turning off lights, electrical appliances and equipment when not in use; and
  • Using stairs instead of elevators.
