Service teaching in Mathematics and Statistics is a major component of teaching activities of the Department. The Department has a commitment of about 200 hours/week of service teaching to students from various departments and programmes of the University. The number of subjects taught is over 60 and these subjects are mostly of levels 2 and 3, complementing the students' main studies. The Department also provides about 140 hours of Preparatory Mathematics teaching for newly-admitted students with weaker Mathematics background. In addition, over 350 hours of supplementary units of Mathematics are also provided for students of the Faculty of Engineering. These supplementary units are intensive tutorials on specific topics from the syllabuses of Engineering Mathematics subjects, offered to all first-year FENG students who wish to have more learning support after having attended lectures of relevant topics. The Department also provides assistance to individual students who have difficulties in their study of mathematics subjects through the Mathematics Learning Support Centre (MLSC). Currently, opening hours of the MLSC is 13:30 to 18:30. An on-line booking system for the MLSC is implemented. |
