CHU Wai Lun, Ivan

Name:  CHU Wai Lun, Ivan
Programme:  Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Physiotherapy
Hobbies:  Running, basketball, travelling, meeting with friends
Achievements: The Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarship 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2015/16
Prior to his studies at PolyU, Ivan studied at Cheung Sha Wan Catholic Secondary School, which placed special emphasis on sports education. This steered his interests toward people’s physical wellness. Also, when he was in S3, he participated in a volunteer programme at a school for students with special needs, which inspired him to engage more with people as a part of his future career. Both these factors contributed to his keenness to pursue a degree in physiotherapy.

He had been encouraged by a senior schoolmate to apply for the Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarship, and had followed suit without much expectation of a favorable outcome. Upon reception of the scholarship, however, he received affirmation that his current chosen career path is the right one. Upon graduation, he hopes to do a placement overseas and study health preventive measures for issues such as obesity. Somewhere down the road, he hopes to apply what he has learned in Hong Kong.

Based on his own experiences, he would like to encourage his fellow PolyU schoolmates to be unafraid of failure when trying something new. Passionate about serving his community, he has initiated various community service projects and experienced minor failures on the way as well, such as being rejected sponsorship. However, Ivan has learned that failures only helped him to understand what about his projects work and what does not, and make modifications accordingly. After all, in Winston Churchill’s words, “Failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”
