Neuroprotective effect of upregulated autophagy in retinal generation

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a neurodegenerative disease affecting the central retina of the aged eye, is a public health issue worldwide since it is a common cause of visual impairment in the aged population. No effective treatment for AMD exist up-to-date. Recently, studies have found that dysregulated autophagy is associated with AMD. It is, however, yet to be determined whether upregulation of autophagy flux in vivo could be protective against AMD. This translational study will investigate the potential neuroprotective effect of autophagy against retinal degeneration in a murine model. The outcome of this study will advance our knowledge on the mechanisms of AMD development, and provide the basis for developing novel therapeutic agents that could benefit many patients suffering from AMD.
