Title of project:
Optical Effects of Orthokeratology Treatment on Eye Growth

Synopsis:
Orthokeratology (ortho-k) treatment causes significant changes in the optical characteristics of the cornea and eye. By flattening the central cornea, ortho-k reduces the degree of myopia of the eye. However at the same time, the ortho-k procedure causes a significant increase in the positive spherical aberration of the cornea and eye. It is this change in spherical aberration that is hypothesized to slow the rate of eye growth and myopia progression. Therefore, in this project, we would like to investigate the optical aberrations of the cornea and eye before and after ortho-k treatment and examine the associations between these changes in aberrations and eye growth and myopia progression. This may help us to understand the mechanism of emmetropization (eye growth regulation) and allow us to refine the ortho-k treatment procedure to better control eye growth.
