Message from Head of School

As the Head of the School of Optometry I would like to share with you what Optometry is as a Profession.

Our School is currently offering the only Honours Undergraduate Programme in Optometry in Hong Kong and Doctor of Health Sciences (Optometry).

Striving to cultivate our students with professional qualities, skills and knowledge as Optometrists, our School has been exerting efforts to maintain high academic standard in teaching with a team of competent and experienced professors and to offer students’ practicum within the supervised and real setting in our teaching clinic, a leading optometric clinic in Asia. Upon the completion of our Degree programme, our graduates, who are trained to be qualified practitioners in the local field of optometry and dedicated professionals with academic and clinical expertise, are favourably received by the industry and worldwide institutions.

In addition to professional training, research is also the indispensable component in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Our goal of incorporating research in the curriculums is to nurture our students to be reflective and critical scientific agents and explore their potentials to develop their future career as a researcher. Pursuing our foci on Myopia and The Ageing Eye, Our School has long been the research hub in Optometry gaining international recognition and hence receiving grants and donation from various sources such as the University, the Industry, the public and individual patrons.

With a vision to enhance the awareness of vision care and the role of optometrists as frontline Vision Care Providers, Our School endeavours to be actively engaged in community projects and provide a full examination of the eyes for general public. The work of Optometrists is more than identifying common vision problems such as short-sightedness or long-sightedness as we work on the diagnosis and treatment of visual diseases and disorders, and even unveil other diseases which the symptoms could appear as disorders in eyes for patients. We are in the meantime developing network with China and other countries by sharing our expertise and working out ways to move forward in the Optometric field with them.

Optometry thirsts for people who are caring and well-developed in terms of scientific mind and communication skills. As a career, Optometry is a gratifying profession that allows you to make contributions to the well-being of the community and earns respect from patients, the community and other health care practitioners.

Optometry is a rewarding profession and I invite you to join our queue in serving the community by giving sight.
