Ortho-k in PolyU

In Hong Kong, the School of Optometry (formerly known as the Department of Optometry & Radiography) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University hosts the only department offering optometric training, and we are very concerned about the practice of ortho-k. As a neutral body, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University fully funds and supports research in ortho-k. Since the mid 1990's, we started to plan a number of projects with private practitioners and overseas experts with the aim of providing safe and healthy ortho-k practice in Hong Kong.

Professional Services

Ortho-k services are provided by the Clinical Optometrists at our Optometry Clinic. The consultation fee is $1000*.

Research Projects

Currently, we are running a series of studies on three main themes, funded by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and external funds:

  • Safety of and ocular changes associated with overnight Ortho-k

  • Improving the effectiveness of ortho-k in myopic reduction

  • Evaluating the effectiveness of advance accelerated ortho-k in myopic control.

Please go to School website (www.polyu.edu.hk/so) for our research outcomes.

Continuing Education

For general public
In addition to this website, we write up articles related to ortho-k in local newspapers for the concerned public. Leaflets about ortho-k are also available in our Optometry Clinic, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

For the practitioners
We believe that continuing education to the local practitioners can help to improve the quality of service in Hong Kong. Since 2004, the School of Optometry has conducted certification courses and examinations in Orthokeratology practice. The name list of practitioners who have attended and passed the course can be found in this website (See: List of ortho-k practitioners who have received PolyU certificate)
