The PolyU Non-local Students Mentorship Programme is a planned
mentoring in which the mentor would provide time to
support and encourage the mentee. As PolyU is
having a sizable intake of non-local students each
year, the assistance provided by the senior students
to facilitate them to cope with the new life in Hong
Kong and PolyU would be significant. SAO
will recruit some PolyU senior students as Peer Tutors to work together hand-in-hand with the
Graduate Mentors (PolyU Research Students) to facilitate the non-local
freshmen's adjustment and integration into the
University, as well as goal-setting and learning.
The Mentorship Programme will be divided into 2
stages. Each focuses on a specific topic (i.e.
Adjustment & Learning;
Study, Networking & Leadership) to help freshmen with their
adjustment as well as learning. The mentors and
tutors will be working under the guidance and
direction of SAO staff in the format of individual as
well as group meetings. At the same time, they
will have to provide periodic reviews of the progress
of their mentees' all-round development.
Graduate mentors will be involved in a range of
helping behaviour, namely:
-
Sharing of adjustment experience
-
Provide mentoring support to enhance academic&
Co-curricular learning
-
Organize value-adding seminars
-
Refer students with difficulties to appropriate
services to meet their needs
-
Help freshmen to settle down and to adjust to life
in Hong Kong
Peer Tutors will be involved in:
-
Provide guidance and support to freshmen's academic
studies by organizing study groups/tutorial sessions
-
Provide insight on goal-setting and to share
learning experience
