Graduate Mentors for NON-LOCAL Students

BACKGROUND
Non-local undergraduate students will be assigned Graduate Mentors (research students) and Peer Tutors (undergraduate students) to facilitate their personal adjustment and integration into the university. The Graduate Mentors will be paid, trained and will be working under the guidance and direction of  SAO staff .  The learning experience in the mentorship programme is both ways, benefiting both the mentors and tutors. 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

A)     Mentors for freshmen

Similar to the previous years, the Non-local Students' Mentorship Programme 2011/12 (for freshmen) will be divided into two stages with different focuses.  Each focuses on a specific topic to help non-local undergraduate freshmen on adjustment as well as learning.  The mentors will be working under the guidance and direction of SAO staff in the format of individual as well as small group meetings.  

 

Brief Information on the Mentorship Programme 2011/12:

Main Tasks:

Mentors' engagement will be around 6-7 hours per week during the semester.  Each graduate mentor will work together with the peer tutor to facilitate freshmen's goal-setting and learning, as well as adjustment.

-    adjustment experience sharing

-    provide mentoring support to enhance academic & co-curricular learning

-    refer students with difficulties to appropriate services to meet their needs

-    organize value-adding seminars

-    arrange talks/lead discussion group on international and local affairs

-    to have regular meetings with mentees (at least twice in Semester I and once in Semester II)

 

B)     Mentors for current students

As new initiative from the coming academic year, SAO would recruit Graduate Mentors for current undergraduate students (those not in the first year of study). Mentors would act as students’ resource persons and are expected to provide support and mentoring advice upon their request. And, the mentors would also be required to out-reach to target students upon the recommendation of SAO.

 

ELIGIBILITY

  • full-time research students
  • active, outgoing, responsible, committed and sociable personality
  • good in active listening and caring
  • general knowledge of undergrad studies in PolyU
  • Mainland or overseas exposure together with at least a year's experience in HK

 

RECRUITMENT INFORMATION

Should you be interested in being our Graduate Mentors, please send your full CV for application to sanonloc@inet.polyu.edu.hk on or before Jul 6, 2011 Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend a group interview in early July and successful candidates will be required to attend a briefing session on August 16 or 17, 2011 and the first meeting with mentees (for those serving freshmen only) on August 24, 25 or 27, 2011.
