About 150 new office-bearers joined the Induction Programme for New Office-bearers of Student Organizations on 11 April 2008. The programme kicked off with an informal tea gathering among students who had just taken up official positions in the Executive Committee, sub-committee, faculty student associations, departmental student societies and affiliated clubs in the Students’ Union.

Our Director of Student Affairs, Mrs. Dorinda Fung, encouraged student leaders to get to know their strengths and weaknesses through the online generic competencies questionnaires on the SPECIAL ePortfolio. The ePortfolio is meant to be an educational tool for students to purse all-round development, through reflection and connection of learning experience and development of generic competencies, as well as the collection of artifacts showcasing personal accomplishments.

The highlight of the programme was a sharing from the former SU President, Mr. Yu Yiu Tung. Smart reminders on how to deal with the press were shared with new office bearers. Tung and the audience enjoyed interactions on very inspiring messages on hot issues like orientation camps, finance of student societies, etc.

Taking up this challenging role as leaders representing students of PolyU, every one of the office bearers are SPECIAL and SMART. Apart from giving out the ‘Quick Resource Guide’, we also shared SPECIAL tips and SMART skills in organizing student activities with student leaders in the evening.
