7. What is the amount of the postgraduate Studentship? Am I eligible for this award?

PolyU offers Research Studentships to full-time PhD or MPhil students. The Studentship is a scholarship intended to be a means of financial support to allow full-time research students to fully focus on their studies. It shall be awarded on the basis of academic merit. The period of the Studentship is decided by the Department according to the student's ability, academic background or experience. The Studentship carries a stipend of HK$13,350 per month. Studentship recipients spend up to six hours of training each week within their Department. The training involves assisting teaching and scholarly activities and is relevant to your formal programme of study.

Part-time students are not eligible for Research Studentships.

8. What are the differences between the Research Programme (MPhil/PhD) and the Taught Postgraduate Programme?

The PhD or MPhil degree is awarded to a student who, upon completing an approved programme of study and research, presents a thesis on the results of his/her research and satisfies the examiners in an oral examination (and other examinations if required) in matters relevant to the subject of the thesis. Students are also required to complete certain taught or guided-study subjects before submitting their thesis. The requirements for this compulsory coursework component are *15 and 9 credits for PhD and MPhil studies, respectively. (One credit is approximately equal to 40 hours of study, including attending classes, private study and examination.)

On the other hand, taught postgraduate programmes focus more on coursework, although students may be required to complete a dissertation. However, most taught postgraduate programmes only admit part-time students. For a non-local student, it is rather difficult to apply for a study visa to Hong Kong to study part-time courses. You may contact the Academic Secretariat at the email address: asadmpg@polyu.edu.hk if you need further information on taught programmes.

(*For students of the School of Accounting & Finance, Department of Logistics and Department of Management and Marketing enrolled on or after 1 September 2003, an MPhil student should earn 12 credits and a PhD student should earn 18 credits.)

9. May I know more about the Student Halls of Residence?

Presently, the University is facing an acute shortage of hall places.  Full-time non-local students are generally provided with accommodation in the Student Halls of Residence on a first-come-first-served basis.  Students may make alternative arrangements for accommodation if necessary.  Please refer to http://www.polyu.edu.hk/hall/.

10. How can I apply for a student visa? Who will be my sponsor?

All overseas students who take part in study programmes in Hong Kong must obtain a Student Visa before departing for Hong Kong. Therefore, you should not travel to Hong Kong without a valid Student Visa. The University will sponsor students, but not their dependents, to apply for a study visa. Should you wish to apply for a dependent's visa for your family members, please approach the Immigration Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region directly [Enquiry hotline: (852) 2824 4055].
