Areas of Strategic Focus In line with its strategy of developing excellence in selected research areas, PolyU established in March 2005 the Niche Areas Funding Scheme to support the further development of areas of research strength built up over time through the Areas of Strategic Developments Scheme and the synergy gained from multidisciplinary collaboration. The University has channelled HK$265 million to support this development between 2005/06 and 2009/10, with a view to building up PolyU’s academic reputation in support of its goal to attain regional and international prominence in niche areas, which fall into the broad subject categories identified in the UGC’s Role Differentiation exercise conducted in October 2003. To continue to excel in these niche areas, PolyU has identified in its Strategic Plan 2008/09 - 2011/12 the following Areas of Strategic Focus, in each of which PolyU aspires to become a global leader:
