Geospatial Reference Book

It is designed to help overcome boundaries in language comprehension and the building of a professional by enhancing awareness to the vocabulary used in Geospatial field. It offers English-Chinese translation with description, diagrams, and alternatives/synonyms. The aim is to allow both Educators and Students to become aware of the terminology used within the Geospatial domain, to reduce the confusion between different specialists of the field, and to clarify and standardise terminology relating to assessments. The current structure of the Reference Book is arranged by categories instead of alphabet as its intention is for users to explore the words rather than relying on it as a dictionary thereby defeating the purpose of raising awareness to the vastness of Geospatial field.

The Reference Book is constructed of two parts: Academic and Discipline.

ACADEMIC

Contains words related to studying and assessment. It aims to build an understanding between students and teachers, to clarify possible misconceptions of expectations of words and/or grades.

  • Academic Abilities: List of abilities and actions common during academic studies
  • Academic Knowledge: List of different knowledge types achievable through studies
  • Academic Performance: List of performance attributes used for classifying academic performance

DISCIPLINE

Contains words related to the various disciplines found in the Geospatial field and most commonly encountered by students. This section contains the following categories:

  • Acronym: List of commonly encountered acronyms
  • Analysis: List of words/phrases associated with data analysis and data processing
  • Data: List of words/phrases associated with data type and data characteristics
  • Geography: List of words/phrases associated with the geographic discipline but used in within the Geospatial context
  • GIS/GIT: List of words/phrases associated with GIS and GIT, may contain words associated with computing, programming, and IT
  • GNSS: List of words/phrases associated with satellite positioning systems, may contain some physics concepts but only those associated with satellite positioning
  • Hydrography: List of words/phrases associated with hydrographic surveying and nautical navigation
  • Land: List of words/phrases associated with lads surveying, land administration, direction, and coordinate systems
  • Mathematics: List of words/phrases and mathematical theories used in Geospatial field
  • Miscellany: List of words/phrases from other disciplines most commonly encountered in Geospatial field (e.g., building and construction, planning, law, etc…)
  • Physics: List of words/phrases and physics concepts surrounding Geospatial field
  • Remote Sensing & Photogrammetry: List of words/phrases related to remote sensing and photogrammetry, may contain some physics concepts
  • Underground Utility: List of words/phrases associated with underground utility surveying and management
  • Visualisation: List of words/phrases associated with cartography, mapping, imaging, and map projection

Geospatial Reference Book (PDF)
The Physical (PDF) copy of the Reference Book also contains examples of map projections for ease of reference.

Geospatial Reference Book (.zip)
A soft copy of the list of words is also made available here on the Platform to allow Educators to create their own physical copy of the Reference Book, which suits the needs of their students. The file contains both the list of words and images used for the Physical version (excludes Map Projection examples).

Geospatial Reference Book (Platform)
The copy currently hosted on the Platform, allows for quick search of terms and discussion between peers. The Platform version will continuously evolve as more people contribute to the discussions.
